Memories Page 1

1. Laying on the beach in front of the Reef Hotel in Waikiki in August of 1969 and hearing about the Manson Family killings on someone else's radio. I had a cousin that lived in Simi Valley near the Spawn Ranch in the Santa Susanna pass where they hung out, and I remember seeing various members running around the place.

2. Buying prom flowers at the florist and running into a friend, Sandy, I forget her last name, who had graduated a couple years before me. She was buying flowers for her young husband's funeral. He had been killed in Vietnam. I didn't know what to say. The war suddenly became a reality for me.

3. Singing at the Republican rally for Richard Nixon at the Anaheim Convention Center with Anita Niles and Jeanette Reed. We drove my dad's 64 1/2 Mustang, number 895 off the assembly line, which I still have, and ate an entire jar of Planters dry roasted peanuts between the three of us while driving there.

4. Sitting around the tables on campus getting a tan. Skipping class.Signing into class then leaving. Everyone did this. I attended very few classes my senior year.

5. Gayle Waldorf's e-kit for p.e. dumped on the floor in front of Larry Steinle, who was the dreamy new guy at the time. He helped her pick up all the stuff, ie, Kotex, Tampa, spare undies, a bunch of personal stuff which was really embarrassing at that time. There were about five of us that had a hard time containing our laughter.

6. I remember when pantyhose first became available. It was our senior year,or maybe junior year. A group of us were all sitting on a bench in the girls locker room talking about the pros and cons between them and the kind held up with garter belts. Seems really funny now.

7. Sitting in the parking lot protesting. Actually sitting with our butts on the asphalt.  Trash cans on fire. The black panthers going across the street and throwing bricks through the windows at Cal State Fullerton. Someone ripped a bunch of toilets out at our school. Don't know if it was the Black Panthers or not.

8. Going to the beach almost every day after school and literally pouring on the baby oil. Not using sunscreen. Didn't even know of sunscreen. Being really tan and wearing white lipstick. We put lemon juice and sun in in our hair to make it blonder. Some girls ironed their hair to make it straight.

9. Going to Hillcrest park where everyone was laying on the grass making out and doing other things. There were people laying everywhere really.  Anywhere there was grass, people were laying in the sun. I remember stopping at an intersection in Santa Barbara.....huge intersection, with trees and grass down the middle. There must have been 100 people laying around.  People with babies and little kids even.  A lot of hitchhikers going north to San Francisco too.

10. FJC being on a winning streak of something like 100 football games in a row.

11. The boys gathering on the high dive to look into the open windows into the girls locker room. I guess some things never change.

12. Being on the drill team and having to have a new pair of white Keds and new pom poms every single Friday for the football games. Also our hair could not be down, it had to be up.

13. Some girls wore a lot of hairpieces and falls, false eyelashes, short polyester a-line dresses and crop tops with little fringies or dingle balls hanging from the hem. They looked a lot like the girls in Austin Powers.  Others dressed like hippies or flower children in ripped Levis with embroidered ribbon trim and hand embroidery.   Everyone wore bell bottom hip-huggers.

14. There was this stuff like baby powder that you would spray into your hair at the roots and rub in to absorb all the oil when you didn't have time to wash your hair. Yuck. (It was called Pssst)
